Exhibition: At the Going Down of the Sun

An exhibition of creative artwork for the season of Remembrance
1 October – 26 November 2026, All Saints Church, Hereford

In 1914, the poet Laurence Binyon wrote in For the Fallen:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

More than a century later, remembering presents a new challenge. The generation who experienced the two World Wars first hand is passing from living memory. Events which shaped families, communities and nations can begin to feel increasingly distant.

This autumn, Hereford Faith in Art invites us to remember through art.

At the Going Down of the Sun brings together work in a range of artistic media, offering personal reflections on the loss, sacrifice and legacy of the two World Wars. The exhibition explores what remembrance means when our memories are inherited through family stories, photographs, objects and the marks left upon our communities.

At its heart is a concern for peace.

Jesus said:

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”
Matthew 5.9

We live in a world where brutal conflict continues and where, for many people, death and injury remain part of everyday life. Remembrance gives us an opportunity to consider the cost at which peace was won by earlier generations, and the responsibility we share for handing that peace on to those who come after us.

The exhibition runs at All Saints Church, Hereford, from 1 October to 26 November 2026.
