Practicing Lent
Prayer — More time given to prayer during Lent draws us closer to the Lord. We might pray for the grace to live out our baptismal promises more fully, for those preparing for baptism at Easter, and for all who celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation with us during Lent.
Fasting — Fasting is an act of self-denial, and a way of standing in solidarity with the poor, locally and throughout the world. Families who fast from meat on Fridays sometimes give the money saved to charitable giving. Fasting can also mean gentler things — encouraging children to be kinder to siblings and parents, or to fast from arguing, building habits that might outlast Lent itself.
Almsgiving — The third pillar of Lent is a sign of care for those in need and gratitude for what God has given us. Works of charity and the promotion of justice are integral to Christian life. Children often enjoy collecting or saving change for a church offering when they know it will help others nearby and further afield.
Above all, teach by example. Respect the meaning of Lent yourself, and try to make it a period of closeness and reflection for the whole family.
